Announcing Groundbreaking Ceremony

The Wakulla County School District has scheduled the official groundbreaking ceremony for new Elementary School A, located at 530 Lonnie Raker Lane, Crawfordville, FL,  for Thursday, June 28th, at 8:30am at the school site. Directions: From US 319 turn east onto Bloxam Cutoff Road, a.k.a. 267. Turn south on to the first paved road, Lonnie Raker Lane.

This new elementary school is being built to address growth as well as the legislative mandates of Class Size Reduction. Construction of the school has already begun with the official opening anticipated for August 2008. Elementary School A construction was made possible by the special facilities fund granted and approved by the Florida Legislation and local funds. The cost of the new school is anticipated to be approximately $19 million. Superintendent David Miller notes, "Our community recognizes the need for school construction. We want all of our students to have ample space and the tools they need to learn. It is exciting to see what is possible when we work together."

The capacity of this school will be 601 students. Jimmie Dugger, Assistant Superintendent for Administration adds, "All three of our elementary schools are either at or above capacity. The opening of this new school will relieve our elementary schools of over crowding." Elementary School A will have a familiar floor plan as it will be modeled after Medart and Crawfordville Elementary Schools. Culpepper Construction Company has been contracted to build the new school, the same company that built Crawfordville Elementary School.

The process to rezone the new elementary school will begin this fall. Once rezoning is complete and a principal is selected, naming the school, choosing a mascot and  picking school colors will follow. This course of action will include the involvement of students, parents, community member and school board employees.

In attendance at the ceremony will be Wakulla District School Board Members, administrators, local government officials, the Legislative Delegation, and area residents and students who will likely attend the new school when it opens. The staffing of the school will begin January 2008. Positions will be posted at http://www.wakullaschooldistrict.org/ .
